CELEBRATING BONDS OVER BOUNDARIES

Taking the bridge over to Canada is almost always a delight.  Whether it is the close-up view of Niagara Falls on theRainbow Bridge, the tree-lined path of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, or the cityscape view of downtown Buffalo on the Peace Bridge, these human-made structures are truly among the seven wonders of Western New York.

Except when the trip isn't delightful.  There have been years when traffic has built up so far it extends past the Duty Free station and into the highway beyond it.  Hours of waiting, trying to find the perfect line through the border crossing, only to have the guards change shifts just before it's your turn, is aggravating to say the least.  The fight through state -run bureaucracy, can take the fun out of a quick trip into Canada.

But, even after all of my years in Buffalo, I still can't get over how lucky we are to be so close to the other side.  While New York City may technically be close enough to drive, the big city of Toronto is a place where you can spend the day and get back before dinner.  Niagara-on-the-Lake, Hamilton, and the Canadian side of the Falls make for great family trips, or just brief reprieves from our country’s politics.

For almost a decade, I have been leading services once a summer at a small church right past Crystal Beach.  The Holloway Memorial Chapel on Abino Bay is a sweet, down-to-earth interfaith prayer space that has been in operation since 1894.

Not having a spiritual leader of their own, they invite clergy from the surrounding area to lead their Sunday services all summer long.  On any given week, you might encounter a Catholic priest, a Protestant minister, or even a Jewish rabbi.  In the 50-125 seat, white-painted room, time seems to stop.  There are no microphones or modern electronics, just the sound of the voices of the choir, mixed together with a collection of Canadian and American congregants singing familiar melodies.

I consider it an honor to lead one of their services every summer, even if it means waking up early to brave the Peace Bridge traffic.  This year, I had added trepidation, not of long lines at the border stations but of cold stares from the border guards.  The recent tariff wars have put a damper on American-Canadian relations.  Fortunately, as I made my way across, I encountered only love and support.  It turns out that Canadians, despite the frosty relations between our political leaders, were as nice as ever.

And, at the chapel, this was doubly true.  Having recently lost their long-time organist, Barbara Ann Cosby, a gem of a woman who always made me feel at home, they were especially glad to see me.  Barbara died quite suddenly in May, only a few weeks before the start of the season.

As always, I began with a prayer for the heads of state: their prime minister, our president, the secretary-general of the United Nations, and the king of England.  Then, over the course of an hour, we prayed together, hoped together, consoled together while shutting out the outside noise and focusing on the inner peace of the space.

As I left, easily making the crossing over the border, I celebrated the beauty of reIations that no amount of politicalposturing could ever fully dampen.

Bring a Friend Sunday and Coffee Fellowship Hour - July 20th

The Annual Strawberry Festival - Wednesday, June 18th 2025

The Annual Strawberry Festival is Now Behind Us – What a Wonderful Evening!

What a fantastic way to kick off the season of celebration and fellowship! On Wednesday, June 18th at 6:30 PM, we gathered at the Buffalo Yacht Club Abino Station for a memorable evening filled with community spirit.

It was a joyful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones, all while enjoying delicious strawberry sundaes, cookies, and refreshments. The Silent Auction added to the excitement, drawing enthusiastic participation from our many bidders. Thanks to their generosity, every item found a home—helping to further support the Chapel’s mission.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all who donated auction items and to the many dedicated volunteers who made the evening possible. Your time, energy, and kindness are truly appreciated.

Most importantly, your generosity enables us to continue our work through the Holloway Memorial Chapel, fostering a sense of community and tradition that enriches all our lives. We are deeply grateful for your ongoing support.

Thank you once again for being part of this special evening and for helping us launch another meaningful summer season.

Warm regards,

Board of Trustees

Obituary of Barbara Ann Cosby

COSBY, Barbara Ann

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Ann Cosby (Devereux) on Tuesday June 3, 2025 at Douglas Memorial Hospital in Fort Erie. Surrounded by the love of her family and just shy of her 83rd birthday, she has now been reunited with her sweetheart Eric and will spend eternity with her Lord and saviour.

A woman with many names, she was beloved Mom to Melody Cosby (Jim), Step-Mom to Rick Cosby (Tina) & Chris Cosby (Linda), “Meema” to Owen & Max, and Grandma Barb to Kylee, Kyra & Larissa.

Barbara is survived by her sisters Beverly Hanson (Keith) & Bonnie Milberry (Bud). Together they formed the Devereux Sisters whom many will remember sang and traveled together for many years as they shared the gospel through music. Auntie Barb was loved dearly and will be remembered by many nieces and nephews, and was the rock to many in the family.

She had a large bonus family of siblings with the ‘Cosby kids’, many foster brothers and sisters and extended family in Pennsylvania and never once turned away a friend in need.

Barb was predeceased by her childhood sweetheart Eric Cosby after 44 years of marriage, parents Howard & Evelyn Devereux (Simpson) and loving nephews Clyde Milberry & Austin MacKinnon.

Her life was dedicated to her faith in God and provided ministry in music her entire life. Having been the organist at the Holloway Memorial Chapel for over 25 years, she loved playing Sunday mornings and directing the choir each summer. Additionally she played the piano beside her sister at Golden Harvest Baptist Church following service at the chapel and has provided music for hundreds of celebrations and services at various churches throughout the Niagara area through the years.

Travelling and singing with her family always filled her heart. She was a passionate piano teacher for many years and pianist for the Workman Quartet. Her love of genealogy made her the go-to resource for all things related to her family and will be missed for being able to answer all the random questions.

Many thanks to Dr Scher and the staff at DMH for their kindness and gentle care of her even if only a short time.  Special thank you to our incredible surprise nurse Hale, Megan and Katie at GNGH for their extra loving attention during her stay.

The family will receive friends on Thursday June 5, 2025 from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m at Benner Funeral Services, 1105 Benner Avenue, Fort Erie. A funeral service will take place on Friday June 6, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Golden Harvest Baptist Church, 3130 Point Abino Rd N, Fort Erie.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to be made to the Golden Harvest Baptist Church. connect with God and find purpose in our lives.

A message from our President - Karen J. Gregory

Dear Friends of the Holloway Memorial Chapel:

Spring has sprung and very soon our beloved Chapel doors will open for our 131st season!  Your Board of Trustees has been hard at work since our closing last September preparing for our June kick-off.

We are very excited to see our old friends and make some new ones.  Speaking of new friends, we would like to grow our congregation and are asking for your help with this.  Please spread the word to your family, friends, your neighbors and new neighbors about our uplifting, thought-provoking, inspirational, non-denominational summer services.

We begin this season on June 15th, and end on August 31st.  Our Coffee Hours will be on both of those Sundays and also on July 20th, “Bring a Friend Sunday”.

The Strawberry Festival, our annual, and only, fundraiser will be on Wednesday, June 18th.  It will again take place at the Buffalo Yacht Club’s summer station on Point Abino Road.  The BYC has been an excellent host for our event for many years, and we are immensely grateful to them.

Our entire community pitches in to make this event, strawberry sundaes, cookies, the silent auction, with many exciting donated items, and you, such a great success!

Advanced tickets will be available through all Trustees. Buy early, buy a lot!

As we look forward to June, may you find and spread joy every day.
